10 Chic Mother’s Day Gifts 2011

It’s the hardest job in the world, being a mother: every day of the year should be Mother’s Day. But the calendar’s one “official” holiday–meant to honor the women who raised us–is coming up (May 8), so, thinking as a daughter, and a mother myself, I put together this list of unexpected gifts. I’d love to give my mother any of these things–and I’d be thrilled to receive one myself.
This woven-silk clutch by Bottega Veneta is an example of timeless style. It’s classic but chic, and both small enough for nights out and big enough to carry all the essentials: lipstick, credit card, cell phone and “mad money.”

In a former life I was a spa junkie, and I’m sure any mother would love a stay at Clinique La Prairie, in Switzerland. You’ve heard the expression, “taking the waters?” After an amazing (and intense) experience at CLP, I knew what it meant. Not to mention the fact that I came home looking and feeling better than I’d thought possible. Definitely in a class by itself.

What woman doesn’t like jewelry? And often, costume pieces are bigger, bolder and even more chic than so-called fine jewelry. Jennifer Miller has the best costume jewelry boutique in New York, and I’ve eyed these faux diamond bracelets many times before. They look so real, I just love them–as would any lucky mother who receives them as a present on Mother’s Day.

My favorite fashion photographer of all time was Richard Avedon, and one of my favorite images is his Dovima with elephants, evening dress by Dior, Cirque d’Hiver, August 1955, shot during the Haute Couture in Paris. I’m not exactly sure Mom would appreciate it as much as I do, but Avedon’s work has always inspired me and I would die to own it!

Speaking of Paris, why not treat your mother and her best friend to a long weekend at the Hôtel de Crillon, with a car and driver at their disposal to explore the City of Lights in comfort and style? I can vouch for the Crillon’s impeccable service, and its location–front and center on the Place de la Concorde–couldn’t be more convenient. Whether they (or you!) want to shop, sight-see or undertake a more elaborate historical tour, Boris (my trusted driver from Versailles Limousines) will take care of everything.

Pamper Mom–or yourself–with any of the moisturizing products from Crème de la Mer. These luxurious creams and serums are miracle-workers (I can tell you from my own experience, they really work–I love the eye cream). After a day at the beach or in a dry office, these are great tools for the fight against sun-damaged or moisture-deprived skin.

Even mothers want to feel sexy, which is why I recommend the silk-and-lace creations of Louise Feuillère. Her exquisite, made-to-measure lingerie is a real find: laden with Old World charm and craftsmanship, but up-to-date and chic at the same time. I particularly like some of her beautiful corsets. I’m not sure Mom would agree, but I think they’re pretty enough for outerwear.

Recently, I’ve been obsessed with my iPod–listening to music inspires me, relaxes me and helps me think. This sleek, attractive little iPod holder from Geneva Lab looks like a cool piece of modern furniture. Even better, it’s completely self-contained (FM radio, speakers and amplifier all in one), so all you or Mom has to do is slip in the iPod and– Voilà –stereophonic sound.

The name Chanel speaks for itself–so chic, so timeless–and this modern-yet-classic J12 automatic sport watch, in high-tech ceramic (with 12 diamond indicators around the face) is no exception. I would wear it all the time!

Last but not least, treat your mother to the luxury of a private chef (even if it’s just for one night). I recommend David Ziff Cooking. I’ve known David and his partner, Alan Bell, for 30 years–not only have they catered grand dinner parties for me, but, on my 5th anniversary, they came to my apartment and prepared an intimate, black-tie dinner for just my husband and me. How swish is that! Get Mom out of the kitchen and let someone else serve her in the comfort of her own home. Happy Mother’s Day!
