Chic Shopping in Paris:
ARNYS

For years I’ve passed by the the Arnys boutique but never felt compelled to check it out–probably because of the name, which sounds vaguely American (or English, for that matter). After all, when I’m in Paris, the French boutiques are what interest me most.

With Jean Grimbert
Well, I was wrong. Friends and colleagues urged me to take a better look at the brand, pointing out that not only is Arnys French, it’s a Parisian institution–a real family company–dating back to 1933. Even in today’s era of mega-conglomerates, Arnys is run by two brothers, Jean and Michel Grimbert. And I had the pleasure of taking a private tour with Jean Grimbert himself–a very charming, very elegant man.

These days, men are looking for options–especially businessmen or guys who prefer traditional to fashionable. It’s one thing for an edgy young man to wear the hippest Comme des Garçons or Damir Doma –that’s easy–but for a regular guy who wants to look current but not over-the-top, the options are limited. M. Grimbert told me his Arnys clients are businessmen, artists, politicians, writers, and television personalities.

Trying on an Arnys jacket, a spécialité de la maison
What intrigued me most about Arnys was the incredible quality of the garments, and the brand’s spin on a classic men’s jacket. It features a supple cut that lets it move and drape freely, making it both elegant and nonchalant at the same time.

I also loved the raincoat with its own cape (and a double lining for cold weather). Obviously, it’s not for everyone–but it’s super chic!

I was surprised to learn Arnys makes just 40 tie styles each year, grouped by color or limited editions. And I was really wowed by the beautiful cashmeres in amazing colors: sweaters, jackets and especially scarves, in surprising hues like chartreuse, bright pink and bold orange.

Arnys also carries handsome shoes and accessories, and will be coming out with a new line of men’s carry-on luggage.

In addition to ready-to-wear, Arnys has a made-to-measure department on its 2nd floor. While we were there–perusing jackets and shirts–Jean told me a funny story about the French Prime Minister, François Fillon, wearing a décontracté Arnys jacket to meet with President Sarkozy. This set off rumors about him leaving his post, and was in all the French newspapers! What great publicity (and certainly a tribute to Arnys).

With Jean Grimbert and his mascot, Bob
Last, but not least (and so very typically French), I was introduced to Jean’s mascot: his dog, Bob. Jean even gave me a charming black-and-white pocket square with Bob’s face and paws printed on it. I gave it to my husband, who now wears it all the time! Obviously, Arnys was a great surprise, and a great success. Next time I’m in Paris, it will be a must visit.
