Not everything about the Hamptons is chic—but there’s always polo. July marks the beginning of the Polo Challenge, hosted by the Bridgehampton Polo Club, and over the course of six consecutive Saturdays some of the world’s top players vie to take home the Monty Waterbury Cup.

Not only does polo bring out high-profile athletes, such as Nacho Figueras (with his Black Watch team, which is so chic, Prince Harry plays with them), but the matches, as well as the invitation-only cocktail receptions, also attract VIP audiences of celebrities, society figures and media types.

At all of these events, looking chic is a must–you’ll see everything from summer dresses in pastels or bright colors (paired with sleek sandals) to trim little jackets with shorts. Some women can pull off towering stilettos, even when stomping the divots between chukkers; and a chic hat looks good and protects you from the sun. However, the ultimate accessory is a pair of fabulous sunglasses, to better view the match and to remain inconspicuous! The men are usually just as chic as the women, in crisp white pants or shorts, custom-made linen shirts and lightweight sport coats.

Cocktails are part of the fun, as well–there’s wine, Champagne and Bloody Marys, along with drinks more in keeping with the day. The Polo Challenge offers up something called a Mid-Pony, made with prosecco and fruit juice and garnished with slices of orange. It’s a great summer drink, made all the more attractive when served by sleek bartenders. And when hunger strikes, guests can enjoy simple tasting menus provided by local restaurants.

But it’s the players themselves who are the real attraction: there’s something very beautiful about these dashing men on horseback. And watching polo is exciting–you can really feel the ponies thundering hooves in the ground as they race the length of the field. Players (typically tall, dark and handsome, whether from Argentina or America) look fashionable in their team uniforms of slim jodhpurs or trousers, colorful polo shirts and tall riding boots. Follow the match to its end, watch the trophy be awarded to the winning team and see which player is named MVP. Nine times out of ten, he’ll be chic!
