HAUTE COUTURE SPRING 2012
IRIS VAN HERPEN
Iris van Herpen was one of the most exciting designers to show during this season of the Haute Couture. This Dutch designer–who has won numerous awards for past collections–was also a disciple of Alexander McQueen (one of my favorite designers), so it’s really no wonder I adored this collection!
Iris played with bold architectural shapes and innovative materials (some of which were more than a bit bizarre) to add three-dimensional volume and texture to her clothes. Some of the results were spectacular, and there were definitely a few standout pieces I would have bought right off the runway!
First on my shopping list was a striking black cape with two big kangaroo pockets, which was a real work of art. Next was a white coat trimmed with iridescent fabric. I also went crazy for a short, white-and-grey jacket, which would work with anything from a great pair of jeans to a long chiffon skirt.
Even the United Nude shoes the models wore looked unique. Three-pronged heels aren’t particularly feminine, but these made every ensemble look that much cooler coming down the runway. I prefer contrast, so I’d probably wear more elegant heels with Iris’s strong pieces to make a real statement.
After the show I bumped into the American singer Beth Ditto, who asked me what fragrance I was wearing. I laughed, because of course my favorite perfume is my own, Sortir le Soir! And it’s possible that Iris van Herpen is now on her way to becoming my new favorite designer. Her style is mine!
