HAUTE COUTURE SPRING 2012
The Haute Couture collection Zuhair Murad presented this season was called “Casino Fever,” and it definitely showcased a certain Las Vegas showgirl-in-Paris vibe on the runway (inspired, apparently, by Sharon Stone). And while I’ve always admired Zuhair’s work, this défilé of sexy, transparent, body-hugging dresses sometimes went too far. Between the beading, feathers, cut-outs and bling, it went over the top, even for me!
There were hints of Balmain, Thierry Mugler and Azzedine Alaïa, often all in one dress! And while I’m a big fan of all three designers (four, of course, counting Zuhair himself), combining so many elements in a single piece turns into a high wire juggling act that’s hard to pull off without falling.
That said, there were definitely some amazing clothes in Zuhair’s collection, including one wow of a dress (very reminiscent of Azzedine Alaïa) that was close-fitting and sexy, but more subdued than the rest of the collection.
