New York Fashion Week Spring 2010:
Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta is famous for elegant design work with hints of glamour, and his Spring 2010 ready-to-wear collection reinforced this reputation. It was beautiful. I was particularly moved by the eveningwear — the vibrant colors, the rich fabrics, the details of the embroidery — sensational! The veiled headpieces added a touch of dramatic flair, but these dresses can certainly stand alone. Look at that tulle black and white column on the top right. So divine. The texture, the handiwork, the thoughtful touches — these are the hallmark of a seasoned pro who has won the favor of women for decades.

There were some standout looks for day-wear, too. I love these two black and white pieces above. Very classy.

These are also gorgeous numbers. The simple shape of the dress on the left is enhanced by a cool belt, some draping and a striking cobalt color. So chic. The ensemble to the right has a lot more going on, but it’s pulled together beautifully. A great day time look for someone who leans toward a more flourished look.
Oscar has legions of loyal clients who rely on him for a sophisticated wardrobe — lots of socialites and political figures in addition to the usual fashion insiders. Of course, no high fashion show would be complete without Anna Wintour. Here she is before the show, wearing a fantastic coat and printed dress.

It was a delight to see my friend Imran Amed, the founder and editor of The Business of Fashion. I hadn’t seen him since the FT Business of Luxury Summit in Monaco back in June. I also said hello to famed fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier, the very talented New York designer Zac Posen, and Carla Sozzani, owner of my favorite retail destination in Milan: 10 Corso Como.

I sat next to Oscar’s son at the show (I’ve heard he’s a budding designer himself, though he didn’t mention it). Afterward, I congratulated Oscar himself backstage. You’d never know he just spent countless hours preparing such a thoroughly marvelous collection — he always looks fabulous.

Finally, I said hello to head of Global Advertising for Estee Lauder, socialite and longtime Oscar de la Renta client Aerin Lauder. I also made sure to see Coco Brandolini of my Mother-Daughter Inherited Beauty Chic List and told her to give her mother Georgina Brandolini my best.

After all these years, Oscar still has it. Bravo!
