In the first part of this video, join Susan at the Bouchra Jarrar défilé in Paris. Bouchra shows during the Haute Couture, but her clothes are actually ready-to-wear (although very fine examples of such). Unlike some maisons, Bouchra focuses on daywear–clothes you would reach for again and again. Her pants, in particular, are beautifully cut, and her jackets are super-sleek. Then, Susan stops by a presentation of Atelier Versace couture. These are extraordinary dresses, and the camera shows you all the amazing details!
Add a commentA New Year always brings new opportunities, especially when it comes to personal style. However, since rules are usually meant to be broken, don’t take these resolutions as written in stone–just think of them as good advice!
1.) Stop following trends and simply wear what works for you. I happen to love Giambattista Valli’s coats for Moncler Gamme Rouge, which would doubtless look fab with jeans and make any sort of outfit instantly chic.
Continue readingIn November, Susan visited Tel Aviv to address a group of women brought together by 9ROOMS, an organization–and online magazine–created by one of Israel’s leading marketing gurus, Iris Zohar. Susan and Iris also spent a day touring the city, and you can join them as they discover some of the best hotels, restaurants, designers and specialty shops that Tel Aviv has to offer.
Add a commentOur celebration of The Daily Shoe wouldn’t be complete without visiting Walter Steiger, a legend in the shoe world who’s been designing gorgeous footwear for decades. Recently, his sons joined the family business and the brand has made a huge comeback after being somewhat dormant for awhile.
Continue readingFor several years now, the trend for watches has been to render them a little bigger each season, a little bolder, and–as a result–a bit more masculine (in my opinion). But since I don’t follow trends, I’ve stuck with my favorites and continued to wear thin watches. My gold Bulgari watch has long been a staple in my wardrobe; and for something more casual, I love Cartier and Hermès. Recently, however, I’ve noticed a move towards thinner, more elegant timepieces. Hmmm. It’s not that I’m a trendsetter–it’s just that I prefer a feminine look, and I wear what suits me. Here are some new favorites!
Continue readingIn mid-November, I took a fascinating trip to Tel Aviv at the invitation of Iris Zohar, the founder of 9ROOMS. It was an incredible experience, and Iris was a tireless guide during my five days there. I spent most of my time with her, discovering the wonders of the city–and I was pleased, and very touched, to discover how warm and welcoming Tel Aviv’s people could be!
Continue readingThis year, our holiday gift guide includes some wonderful surprises: there are items both large and small, and from all over the globe (Argentina to France to Turkey and beyond). Whenever we compile these special holiday lists, we naturally consider what we would like to receive–after all, things that appeal to us are likely to appeal to our families and friends. Some of the items we’ve chosen are meant for women, some are for men–but most would bring joy to almost anyone. And while the list is short–10 perfect suggestions–everything we’ve included is special, exclusive or just plain chic. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Christmas comes but once a year, so go for the crème de la crème. Assuming you’ve been nice this year, Santa will follow suit!
For example, these gorgeous tarot cards are part of Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project, sponsored by the KLÜP Foundation and recently mounted as a show at The Andy Warhol Museum. Designed by 78 different “creative icons” (including fashion legends Christian Louboutin and Karl Lagerfeld, as well as contemporary artists such as John Currin and Terry Richardson), the deck of cards is packaged and billed as a “do-it-yourself performance art project.” Any fashionista in your life will want to own a set!
Continue readingChristmas Eve found me shopping at Maxfields–my favorite boutique in Los Angeles, known for carrying fabulous pieces by Rick Owens. Sure enough, I spied a short, fur-and-leather jacket that was simply to die for, displayed alone and screaming my name. I tried it on, and it looked, and felt, amazing. The shape was very chic; the leather was incredibly soft; and the pekan fur (another name for marten) was of extraordinary quality–and warm, too. Even my friend, Gabriele, had to agree: Omigod, he said, it’s so you. And while Christmas itself has come and gone, I do have a birthday coming up soon…!
Add a commentThe Upper East Side has long been home to “social” New York, but it’s also where you’ll find Museum Mile–a stretch of Fifth Avenue that holds the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim and (tucked at the north end of Central Park), the Museum of the City of New York. Tasked with celebrating the city’s diversity and “perpetual transformation,” this gem of a museum recently mounted an exhibit that looks at the work of 20th-century photographer and artist, Cecil Beaton, and his extraordinary career in New York. Along the way, the show offers proof of the power of glamour, and the transformative effect it can have on portraitist, subject and viewer alike.
Continue readingThe very dashing Rupert Sanderson is a charming young Brit and a terrific shoe designer, not to mention a regularly-featured name on The Daily Shoe. I caught up with him during a recent Paris Fashion Week at his boutique behind the Palais Royal, where he was showing his Spring 2012 collection.
