In the first part of this video, join Susan at the Bouchra Jarrar défilé in Paris. Bouchra shows during the Haute Couture, but her clothes are actually ready-to-wear (although very fine examples of such). Unlike some maisons, Bouchra focuses on daywear–clothes you would reach for again and again. Her pants, in particular, are beautifully cut, and her jackets are super-sleek. Then, Susan stops by a presentation of Atelier Versace couture. These are extraordinary dresses, and the camera shows you all the amazing details!
Add a commentIt’s always a very special experience, seeing the Givenchy Haute Couture each season–it’s shown as a small, but utterly extraordinary, presentation held in the beautiful salons of the Hôtel d’Evreux, on the Place Vendôme.
Continue readingThere’s always a buzz of curiosity and excitement surrounding a Chanel Haute Couture show–I, for one, am always awed by Karl Lagerfeld’s seemingly endless ability to recombine (even reinvent) the vocabulary of basic elements we’ve all come to associate with this legendary maison.
This season’s Haute Couture presentation took place inside the Grand Palais, which had been transformed to resemble the Place Vendôme by night. Ah yes: Paris is always beautiful, but there’s something about the city at night that’s like nowhere else. And Karl deliberately arranged for his défilé to start late (10:30 PM), in order to recreate an authentic vision of nighttime Paris. The guests gathered before the show for cocktails and canapés, then made their way inside the enormous venue and gradually took their places.
Continue readingLast season, I went to see Giovanni Bedin‘s haute couture collection for The House of Worth for the first time. As you may recall, it was all about corsets (paired with tutus) and, as a contemporary collection, it was a little difficult to understand. But this time, I saw a real evolution in Giovanni’s work: corsets had turned into dresses, gowns and especially jackets. Everything was black, white or nude; there were elements of panniers and crinoline cages; and most pieces were finished with intricate lace details.
Continue readingJoin Susan for another fabulous day of the Paris Haute Couture, and enjoy a glamorous show by Elie Saab (always a favorite: even the models feel more beautiful wearing his clothes). Then switch gears for an enigmatic and more mysterious collection presented by Maxime Simoens, who offers a hybrid of ready-to-wear and couture designed for younger, but sophisticated, clients.
Add a commentThere’s no question, Maxime Simoens has talent, and I’ve enjoyed seeing his presentations. In the past, he’s been inspired by Sofia Coppola (her films The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette informed his two last collections), but this time he imagined a Gothic retelling of the vampire legend, Nosferatu.
Continue readingStéphane Rolland puts on a couture show that celebrates everything the Haute Couture should be: beautiful clothes, extraordinary craftsmanship and the transformative power of glamour (inspired, in this case, by the legendary model Carmen Dell’Orefice, fashion icon extraordinaire).
Add a commentJoin Susan in Paris, the world’s most beautiful city, to see the show put on by Julien Fournié to present his collection of Haute Couture. Then shift gears from rock-concert extravaganza to updated fashion history, as Giovanni Benin presents his designs for the legendary House of Worth.
Add a commentElie Saab, the king of red-carpet dressing, showed a stellar défilé de mode for the Haute Couture. It’s rare when I can say I loved everything about a collection, but I loved this one, from the palette (blush, aquamarine, slate blue, bronze) to the shimmering beadwork. It was a vision of lightness, overflowing with lace, tulle and chiffon–so feminine and full of glamour!
Continue readingJulien Fournié, as a “guest member” of the Chambre Sydicale de la Haute Couture, is invited to present his collection during the Paris show schedule. But leave it to Julien to find a unique venue–he unveiled his 5th collection at Showcase, a boîte de nuit. Julien has a certain style (to call it “not classic” would be understatement), and perhaps it’s not completely Haute Couture–but there were many pieces in this futuristic fantasy that were quite fabulous.
