We love the Maison Gerard, a chic little gallery in Greenwich Village that specializes in very fine 20th-century French furniture (Jaques Adnet, LeLeu, Jean-Michel Frank, etc.), as well as work by contemporary artists, craftsmen and designers. The Maison’s current exhibit features a selection of alabaster, wood and steel “luminous sculptures” by Stephen Downes, a New York City native who attended the School of Visual Arts and studied under master stone carver René Lavaggi. Stephen’s pieces (like the Moon Sconce, shown above) are all recent creations, but they evoke another era and suggest an interesting combination of American and European sensibilities. They’re also rare works of art that function as lighting, which we find particularly chic.
Add a commentGhosts, ghouls and goblins aside, Halloween can be chic–especially with the help of a makeup wizard like Monika Crouch. This talented young woman turned a hobby–and obsession–into a full-time job, rendering beautiful faces even more so (she specializes in brow shaping and eyelash extensions at Manhattan’s Pierre Michel salon). Monika also works regularly with private clients–and, like a fashion-savvy fairy godmother, appears wherever she’s needed with powder brush and mascara wand in hand. For Halloween, she can transform you, giving you eyes of fire, perhaps, or the death’s-head look of a chalky skull. We, of course, wanted something glamorous: a “mask” of makeup that’s comfortable and chic. The result, shown above, is spectacular.
Continue readingIt’s the hardest job in the world, being a mother: every day of the year should be Mother’s Day. But the calendar’s one “official” holiday–meant to honor the women who raised us–is coming up (May 8), so, thinking as a daughter, and a mother myself, I put together this list of unexpected gifts. I’d love to give my mother any of these things–and I’d be thrilled to receive one myself.
Continue readingI was inspired to go glam–big time–for my holiday gift guide this year. While thinking about what to buy everyone, I (naturally) considered what I would love–and, usually, what I love is what my family and friends would like, too. With this in mind, I made a short list of items for her (that’s me) and him (my husband). And while my list is short, everything on it is exclusive, special and totally chic. Christmas comes but once a year, so why not go for the crème de la crème? I hope Santa is good to you!
Continue readingThis year, our holiday gift guide includes some wonderful surprises: there are items both large and small, and from all over the globe (Argentina to France to Turkey and beyond). Whenever we compile these special holiday lists, we naturally consider what we would like to receive–after all, things that appeal to us are likely to appeal to our families and friends. Some of the items we’ve chosen are meant for women, some are for men–but most would bring joy to almost anyone. And while the list is short–10 perfect suggestions–everything we’ve included is special, exclusive or just plain chic. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Christmas comes but once a year, so go for the crème de la crème. Assuming you’ve been nice this year, Santa will follow suit!
For example, these gorgeous tarot cards are part of Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project, sponsored by the KLÜP Foundation and recently mounted as a show at The Andy Warhol Museum. Designed by 78 different “creative icons” (including fashion legends Christian Louboutin and Karl Lagerfeld, as well as contemporary artists such as John Currin and Terry Richardson), the deck of cards is packaged and billed as a “do-it-yourself performance art project.” Any fashionista in your life will want to own a set!
Continue readingI’m a die-hard Europhile (and prefer the other side of the Atlantic), but even I have to admit there are some chic destinations on this side, as well. I was reminded of this last weekend, when my family and I escaped the brutal New York City heat wave to spend time at our summer home on Nantucket.
Continue readingA new, digital age is upon us–but not all of civilization’s leisurely arts have disappeared. While our days are full of emails, tweets and Facebook posts, there are still some people putting pen to paper, whether to invite guests to a party, share news with friends or thank last night’s hostess for a lovely time.
Justin Felber (chief operating officer) and Henri Richter-Werner (creative director) co-founded Connor just over a year ago. Because they’d both worked at Mrs. John L. Strong– grande dame of Manhattan stationers–they knew from long experience that a small-but-demanding insider’s group of connoisseurs would always require distinctive notecards and writing paper.
Continue readingIt’s hard to believe how very quickly this year has flown by, but here we are in December–a month that’s traditionally full of fun and frolic. Being an über lover of Champagne, I was completely wowed by this fabulous jeroboam of Moët & Chandon. It’s a limited-edition bottle, offered just for the holiday season, and it comes with all the trimmings: hand-applied gold leaf (courtesy of French jewelry house and medal specialist, Arthus-Bertrand); an engraved medallion; a red wax seal; and a three-dimensional, sculptural version of the brand’s signature black ribbon. There’s even a sleek little gold pen that lets you write directly on the gilt bottle, so you can add notes of congratulations, commemoration or just general good wishes. It’s the sort of extra touch that’s charming, clever, unique, unusual and exceptional–all the things I love. It’s also quite chic, which makes it the perfect gift for a housewarming or holiday party–or any sort of celebration. Especially for Champagne lovers like me!
Add a commentWe’ve always admired these very witty cuff links by Verdura, which screw together just like real nuts & bolts–but are much more dashing, since they’re made of solid 18k gold. And any dad who’s had to assemble a jungle gym or repair a bicycle for you or your siblings would probably love them, too.
Continue readingWe’re in the midst of New York Fashion Week, but shopping in Paris is often on our minds–not least because the prêt-à-porter shows will soon be taking us back. Join Susan as she visits the new Giambattista Valli boutique; the Walter Steiger shop (look for a recent Daily Shoe!); a new discovery, Quintessence; and an old favorite, Guy Laroche. Happy shopping!
