A TALE OF TWO CITIES
NEW YORK & PARIS

NEW YORK & PARIS - A townhouse in Greenwich Village, or an apartment in the 8th _arrondissement_?

New York and Paris are two of the most enchanting cities in the world, and I’m fortunate to call both of them home (depending on the time of year). Of course, each city has its own, unique energy, along with all the essentials that make living between the two a real joy. Here are a few of my favorite places.

ZegnArt in Rome

ZegnArt in Rome - The beautiful garden courtyard at the _Hotel de Russie_

While in Paris last month for the Prêt-à-Porter, I happened to see a friend of mine who’s the social media specialist at Ermenegildo Zegna. He told me the Zegna team had a lovely proposition in mind: would I care to attend the company’s upcoming ZegnArt unveiling (and related celebrations) in Rome? There was no need to ask twice–I hadn’t been to Rome in a while, and I love the Zegna brand. They took care of all details, and on March 20, I arrived at the fab Hotel Boscolo Exedra Roma and was whisked right up to my room.

10 CHIC RESOLUTIONS FOR 2012

10 CHIC RESOLUTIONS FOR 2012 -

A New Year always brings new opportunities, especially when it comes to personal style. However, since rules are usually meant to be broken, don’t take these resolutions as written in stone–just think of them as good advice!

1.) Stop following trends and simply wear what works for you. I happen to love Giambattista Valli’s coats for Moncler Gamme Rouge, which would doubtless look fab with jeans and make any sort of outfit instantly chic.

Stephen Downes At Maison Gerard

Stephen Downes At Maison Gerard -

We love the Maison Gerard, a chic little gallery in Greenwich Village that specializes in very fine 20th-century French furniture (Jaques Adnet, LeLeu, Jean-Michel Frank, etc.), as well as work by contemporary artists, craftsmen and designers. The Maison’s current exhibit features a selection of alabaster, wood and steel “luminous sculptures” by Stephen Downes, a New York City native who attended the School of Visual Arts and studied under master stone carver René Lavaggi. Stephen’s pieces (like the Moon Sconce, shown above) are all recent creations, but they evoke another era and suggest an interesting combination of American and European sensibilities. They’re also rare works of art that function as lighting, which we find particularly chic.

Amalie & Analeena

Amalie & Analeena - Amalie (Lina's sister) makes these extraordinary "raw-cut" diamond rings

A few years ago, while at Harrods in London, I noticed a beautiful handbag on the main floor. Its creator was Lina Hamed for Analeena, and I tucked the name away for future reference. Soon after, during the Prêt-à-Porter, I met Lina at the Hôtel George V to see her full collection–and I was bowled over! Since then, she’s been a regular stop for me during the Paris shows.

This season, I also met Lina’s sister, Amalie, who was helping to show the bag collection. I noticed a fabulous ring on Amalie’s finger–and since I’m such a jewelry fanatic, I had to ask what it was. Turns out, she’d designed it herself, and put it together using raw diamond slices (essentially, pieces that might be tossed out), which she’d shaved down even further. These stones have a subtle, glimmering appearance, not so shiny as to blind you, just understatedly chic. Now I’m obsessed: I have to have one! For the moment, Amalie makes each piece to order, but I can see great things ahead for her!

TEL AVIV - Iris Zohar, _left_, and Susan look over the selection at Abraham Men's Accessories

In mid-November, I took a fascinating trip to Tel Aviv at the invitation of Iris Zohar, the founder of 9ROOMS. It was an incredible experience, and Iris was a tireless guide during my five days there. I spent most of my time with her, discovering the wonders of the city–and I was pleased, and very touched, to discover how warm and welcoming Tel Aviv’s people could be!

ZegnArt in Rome Video Diary -

Join Susan in Rome for a whirlwind, two-day trip centered around the latest installment in the Ermengildo Zegna brand’s ongoing series of ZegnArt projects–in this case, the debut of a commissioned piece by Lucy + Jorge Orta at the MAXXI contemporary art museum. Guests enjoy a tour of Imperial Rome; a private viewing of the Vatican Museum; and, of course, a gala opening to celebrate the new work, Fabulae Romanae (Roman Tales). It’s an exciting event, and Anna Zegna, Gildo Zegna and their team prove to be excellent hosts. All in all, a remarkable trip that wraps up far too soon!

RIck Owens Pekan Jacket

RIck Owens Pekan Jacket -

Christmas Eve found me shopping at Maxfields–my favorite boutique in Los Angeles, known for carrying fabulous pieces by Rick Owens. Sure enough, I spied a short, fur-and-leather jacket that was simply to die for, displayed alone and screaming my name. I tried it on, and it looked, and felt, amazing. The shape was very chic; the leather was incredibly soft; and the pekan fur (another name for marten) was of extraordinary quality–and warm, too. Even my friend, Gabriele, had to agree: Omigod, he said, it’s so you. And while Christmas itself has come and gone, I do have a birthday coming up soon…!
